In a bad economy, funding for art ventures is first to go. Start Soma
deserves high praise for opening its doors and showcasing affordable artwork
by some of the best underground artists around. More than 50 artists
participate in the flagship show, including LA heavy hitters Shepard Fairey
and Logan Hicks, SF's own graffiti and poster artists DAve, NoMe, Mars and
Misk, and Anthony Skirvin (of "Warned" fame), who's back in the art circuit
after a two-year break. The show also includes montage master Winston Smith,
who immortalized Dead Kennedys album covers, and Aidan Hughes, acclaimed
illustrator known for his work with German industrial band KMFDM.
